Since 2017, governments worldwide have started to design national strategies for artificial intelligence (AI). Several countries have since refined their initial AI vision(s) and ambitions, clarifying their priorities and implementation plans for both the deployment and the governance of AI. Addressing a blind spot in the AI scholarship, this research examines the second-generation national AI strategies—released between 2020 and 2024—focusing on their contribution to harmonizing pathways towards a global AI governance approach. Using qualitative content analysis, the study explores the strategic positioning of 6 countries that pioneered the revisions of their strategies, comparing their regulatory orientation and international collaboration approaches.

We are excited to present a series of online webinars as part of the Science and Technology in International Relations Study Group at the Institute. These sessions will explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and international affairs, featuring distinguished guest speakers who will share insights on topics such as AI governance, global security, ethics, and the role of emerging technologies in diplomacy.

Join us as we engage with experts to discuss how AI is shaping the future of international relations.
